How to Calculate a Discount

1
Convert the discount to a decimal

Divide the discount percentage by 100.

20% → 0.20
2
Calculate the savings

Multiply the original price by the decimal.

Savings = Original Price × Discount Rate
3
Subtract to get the final price

Subtract the savings from the original price.

Final Price = Original Price − Savings
Final Price = Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply two discounts in a row?

Apply each discount sequentially. For example, 20% off then 10% off on a 1000 item: 1000 × 0.80 = 800, then 800 × 0.90 = 720. Note: this is not the same as 30% off.

Is 50% off the same as buy-one-get-one-free?

Only if you buy exactly two items. 50% off applies to one item, while BOGO requires purchasing two.

What if the discount is over 100%?

A discount over 100% would mean the store pays you, which is not realistic. The calculator shows a validation message for this case.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Use the Reverse Percentage Calculator. Divide the final price by (1 − discount/100) to find the original.
