About BMI

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure using your height and weight to estimate body fat. Formula: weight (kg) / height (m)².

BMI Limitations

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes may have high BMI with low body fat. Always consult a healthcare professional.

Why Different Standards?

Health risks vary by ethnicity. Asian populations face higher risks at lower BMI values, so Japan and Asia-Pacific use stricter cutoffs than WHO.

Common Use Cases

Personal Health Check

Quickly see where you fall on international BMI scales and track changes over time.

Fitness Goal Setting

Use the normal weight range for your height to set realistic targets for weight loss or gain.

Pre-Appointment Screening

Check your BMI before a doctor's visit so you can discuss your results with specific questions in mind.

Comparing Regional Standards

See how your BMI is classified under WHO, Japan (JASSO), and Asia-Pacific criteria side by side.

Family Health Awareness

Calculate BMI for family members to promote awareness of healthy weight ranges across age groups.

Unit Conversion Convenience

Switch between metric (cm/kg) and imperial (ft-in/lbs) units without manual conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy BMI range?

Under the WHO standard, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight. However, Asian populations face health risks at lower values, so Japan (JASSO) uses 18.5–24.9 and Asia-Pacific uses 18.5–22.9 as the normal range.

Is BMI accurate for athletes or muscular people?

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. People with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat. If this applies to you, consider additional measures like body fat percentage or waist circumference.

Does BMI apply to children and teenagers?

This calculator is designed for adults (18+). For children and teenagers, BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific percentile charts, which require a different approach.

Why does Japan have a different standard?

Research shows that Japanese and other Asian populations develop obesity-related health conditions at lower BMI values than Western populations. JASSO (Japan Society for the Study of Obesity) established stricter cutoffs to reflect this.

Are my height and weight sent to a server?

No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. Your height and weight are never transmitted to any server.

Should I rely solely on BMI for health decisions?

No. BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has limitations. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for a comprehensive health assessment.
